Achieving Long Term Alibaba Cloud Cost Optimization

There are a number of tools of the market that can help companies achieve Alibaba Cloud cost optimization. Unfortunately many of them are not effective in the long term. However, this is not necessarily the tools´ fault. In many cases a company goes through the process to optimize AliCloud costs, and introduces best practices in order to maintain optimization. Unfortunately, bad habits creep in over time, best practices are abandoned, and the optimization process has to start all over again.

It is a scenario we have seen many times over and, for this reason, we are developing ParkMyCloud to simplify Alibaba Cloud cost optimization and then maintain the optimization of resources through improved governance. The result will be that many companies will benefit from long term Alibaba Cloud cost optimization – as our clients using the AWS, Azure and Google Cloud platforms have already done so. The following is a brief explanation of how ParkMyCloud will optimize AliCloud costs.

How ParkMyCloud will Optimize AliCloud Costs

ParkMyCloud is a lightweight SaaS app that will primarily schedule start/stop times for non-production ECS instances – such as those used for development, staging and testing. It determines which instances are suitable for scheduling (or “parking” as we call it) by conducting a discovery of a company´s accounts via a permissions-limited role. The app identifies suitable instances according to the names and tags assigned to them and displays them across a single-view dashboard.

System administrators can apply the same parking schedule to all the suitable instances, or mix and match parking schedules according to the requirements of each development team. There will be four parking options to choose from:

  • A selection of preconfigured parking schedules – for example “start at 9:00 a.m. Monday to Saturday/stop at 6:00pm Monday to Saturday”. These are based on the most popular schedules chosen by our existing customers.
  • The option to create bespoke parking schedules via an intuitive day/time grid. Bespoke parking schedules can be applied by instance, by user, by team or universally depending on the company´s requirements.
  • Administrators will be able to activate the “SmartParking” feature, which will calculate the optimum parking schedule and make recommendations based on each instance´s use. These recommendations can be adjusted as necessary.
  • Select an “Always Parked” schedule which means the instance is effectively switched off. Like all the other parking options, schedules can be interrupted (“snoozed”) with the click of a mouse when access to a parked instance is required.

As each parking schedule is selected, the projected savings over the next thirty days will appear on the single-view dashboard. When the parking schedules are activated (i.e. after they have been running for twenty-four hours), a second figure displays the actual savings. These figures can be downloaded in report form and monitored to ensure the projected savings figure is maintained. If they are not, system administrators can investigate why.

Achieving Long Term Alibaba Cloud Cost Optimization

Long term Alibaba Cloud cost optimization will be achieved via a robust policy engine and a comprehensive reporting suite. Using the policy engine, system administrators will be able to create policies that assign parking schedules to suitable instances automatically, that prevent instances being assigned to other users, teams or credentials, and that prevent parking schedules being detached from an instance or overridden. This feature will help to enhance accountability and security as well.

The reports produced by ParkMyCloud will not only help long term Alibaba Cloud cost optimization, but also performance optimization. These will be based on the heat maps produced by ParkMyCloud during the “SmartParking” process, and will help identify over-provisioned instances that can be right-sized in order to reduce costs, and under-provisioned resources that can have their capacities expanded to improve performance. The reports will also help identify unused resources that can be terminated.

The likely savings will be significant. Based on the example preconfigured parking schedule quoted above (“start at 9:00 a.m. Monday to Saturday/stop at 6:00pm Monday to Saturday”) companies will save almost 68% on the cost of deploying non-production instances on Alibaba Cloud. With further savings attributable to automating policies and right-sizing over-provisioned resources, ParkMyCloud will likely pay for itself within two months.
