AWS Sizing Recommendations

Getting accurate AWS sizing recommendations is considered by some in the IT professional to be more of an art than a science. The calculations required to balance factors such as memory, CPU, input/output, storage and bandwidth utilization can be extremely complicated, and that is before you include factors such as auto-scaling groups and cloud cost optimization.

For a business migrating from a physical infrastructure to the cloud, it is very difficult to know where to begin. Businesses that have had a cloud presence for a number of years can experience problems with AWS sizing recommendations due to the volume of resources they have deployed on AWS. Fortunately there is a solution, and it is not an expensive one!

Get Accurate AWS Sizing Recommendations with ParkMyCloud

There are a number of cloud management solutions that are capable of making AWS sizing recommendations, but many of these include bundles of software you will pay for and may never use. ParkMyCloud by comparison is a lightweight app that simply identifies which resources are overprovisioned and then makes AWS sizing recommendations for you.

All you need to do in order to get accurate AWS sizing recommendations is to log into ParkMyCloud´s web-based portal with your super-admin credentials. You then create a permissions-limited IAM role for ParkMyCloud and allow it to conduct a discovery of your resources. Once the discovery process is finished, all your AWS resources will be displayed across ParkMyCloud´s single-view dashboard.

The dashboard display itself is quite useful for providing total visibility over your AWS account. This helps improve governance of your account and enforces accountability on your development teams. However, most useful of all (in the context of AWS sizing recommendations), the dashboard display provides you with analytics about each resource, such as their peak and average utilization.

Alongside each Instance Utilization Report, ParkMyCloud identifies which resources are overprovisioned and makes accurate AWS sizing recommendations for you. Our app will also identify overprovisioning within auto-scaling groups and logical groups of RDS and EC2 instances, “zombie” instances that no longer serve a useful purpose and resources that could be reallocated to a less expensive pricing plan.

Auto-Scheduling is the Second Stage of Cloud Cost Optimization

Getting accurate AWS sizing recommendations – and acting upon them – is only the first stage of cloud cost optimization. Once you have resized your AWS instances, you can maximize savings by scheduling start/stop times for non-production instances. These are typically development, staging and testing instances that are not required outside work times.

The process for “parking” non-production instances is already half completed if you have used ParkMyCloud in the resizing process; as, during the discovery process, our app highlights which instances are suitable for parking based on the names and tags assigned to them. You simply click the highlighted instances and apply a parking schedule to them.

To make this process easier still, we have included a selection of preconfigured parking schedules – for example: “start” at 8.00 a.m. each morning, and “stop” at 8.00 p.m. each evening (Monday to Friday). You can chose to apply whichever schedules are most appropriate for your requirements to whichever instance you like. You are not tied to using the same schedule for all the instances.

One of the preconfigured options is “permanently parked”. This option switches off non-production instances permanently until access is required. Developers can “snooze” the schedule with the click of a mouse when access is required; and, if they forget to restart the permanently parked schedule once they have finished using the instance, the schedule reactivates automatically after a period of inactivity.
